The Collective Abroad

The Collective Abroad emerged out of an international project of seven European Conservatories. In May 2019, a handful of talented students met in Hamburg (DE) to prepare for a concert at the Elbjazz Festival. In one week, they rehearsed and successfully performed their original repertoire at one of the biggest jazz festivals in Germany. What started as an annually recurring project, turned into a permanent collaboration, when members of The Collective Abroad decided to continue playing together despite the distances and borders between them.

Cooperation across long distances gives The Collective Abroad many opportunities, but means many challenges at the same. To be able to meet and play together, The Collective Abroad tours extensively across Europe. Despite all challenges and pandemics, the band performed seven international tours between 2019 and 2022. Live on the road inspires The Collective Abroad to write new music, develop new musical concepts and produce new music all the time.

The Collective Abroad emerged out of The European Jazz Laboratory - an international project of seven European music academies. Founding members of the band met in Hamburg in 2019 during an annually recurring collaboration between music academies of Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Denmark.

The Cycle

European Jazz Lab 2019

The Cycle is the second album by The Collective Abroad. The music on the album is composed by all seven members of the band plus special guests Julia Perminova and Clara Fornander. The Cycle was recorded at The HideOut Studio in Aalborg (DK), July 2021. The first single Prosopagnosia was published in November 2021. The second Single Sea Lullaby was published in January 2022.

“The Jazz Laboratory in Hamburg was a quite special experience. Everyone contributed to our sound with original compositions, and regardless of our different musical backgrounds and traditions, the band members showed an overwhelming curiosity and enthusiasm for the project, leading to a well-received concert a few days later during the Elbjazz festival - one of the largest jazz festivals in Germany. - Jan Sedlák, The Collective Abroad

Since its foundation in 2019, The Collective Abroad became a hot upcoming act and started establishing a profile of an intensely touring band.

RESONANCE is a series of audio reactive visual installations by M. Pekárik (SK) and L. Paniuskyte (LT), which are adapted to real-time musical performances. RESONANCE No.1 was presented at The Collective Abroad’s release concert in july 2020 at The Center for Danish Jazz History (Aalborg, DK) and RESONANCE No.2 was introduced in October 2020 at Huset (Aalborg, DK) during The Collective Abroad’s second album pre-production session.
